REVIEW
The COVID-19 pandemics has led to major changes in healthcare systems. The burden of cases of COVID-19 required severe adaptations in the dynamics of hospitals, especially with the reduction in the number of elective surgical procedures. Thus, surgical residency programs have a direct impact on one of its main training bases. This study aims to show the challenges to training residents in neurosurgery in the context of the pandemic. The integrative review was carried out through the analysis of studies from the last two years found in the LILACS and MEDLINE databases by searching for “Residency”, “Neurosurgery” and “Pandemic” terms. After applying the inclusion criteria 11 articles were selected for the final review. Neurosurgery residency programs were heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemics. There are several short-term damages arising from this circumstance and future studies may define what medium and long-term effects will derive from this period of health crisis around the world. Health systems and residency programs must therefore anticipate new possible outbreaks in order to obtain more effective responses to problems encountered in the future.
